Seattle University

Seattle University, situata nel nord ovest degli Stati Uniti (Google Maps), offre dei corsi interessanti per il futuro giurista e per il laureato che vuole specializzarsi dopo la laurea.
L'università chiede agli studenti di dotarsi di un portatile per lo studio nell'università. Le richieste sono molto specifiche e pure i requisiti minimi sono relativamente elevati. Tutto questo trova una sua giustificazione nel fatto che l'università di Seattle prevede l'utilizzo di software specifici per la realizzazione di determinati esami e portatili non performanti potrebbero causare problemi se non compromettere alcuni risultati. A tal scopo si fanno richieste specifiche pure sulla tipologia di processore e sul sistema operativo, che, come si potrà notare, è XP Professional, che in molti portatili, che potrebbero essere adatti ad uno studente, presenti sul mercato italiano non è contemplato.
Vi è pure una nota sui Mac: "non supportati". La motivazione è il fatto che i computer della Apple hanno meno del 10 % del mercato e l'università non ha risorse per supportare sistemi operativi differenti.
La Seattle University per venire incontro alle esigenze degli studenti ha realizzato un programma di acquisto di computer Dell e di sostegno economico all'acquisto.

Le ragioni supportate dall'università sul mondo Mac possono essere condivisibili, ma non giustificabili: per chi avesse già un computer Mac non vi è altra possibilità che non acquistarne un altro. E questo, sinceramente mi sembra eccessivo in un mondo che non guarda più con tanto entusiasmo al sistema operativo di Microsoft e si sta aprendo ad altre soluzioni (pacchetto Office compreso) alternative.
Il fatto di dotarsi di Office 2003 mi pare fuoriluogo: esistono altre soluzioni similari e a volte migliori del prodotto di Microsoft e per giunta compatibili che non giustificano tale imposizione.
